Two fabric families dominate the bedsheet market: brushed polyester and cotton. Both sell well, but they answer different buyer problems. This guide walks through the five factors that matter most when you order at scale — hand feel, price, durability, care, and moisture — so you can pick the right one for your market.
What brushed polyester actually is
Brushed polyester starts as a plain woven or knitted polyester base. A brushing machine lifts the surface fibres with fine wire rollers, creating a soft, slightly napped face. The result feels close to flannel, keeps its shape after washing, and does not shrink the way cotton can.
The base is almost always 100% polyester filament or a polyester blend. GSM (grams per square metre) for bedding runs from 85 to 160. For bedsheets, most buyers land between 110 and 140 GSM — dense enough to feel substantial, light enough to stay affordable.
Hand feel and warmth
Brushed polyester is warm on contact. That is why it sells so well in colder seasons and in markets where customers sleep with the window open. Cotton, by contrast, feels crisp when new and softens after a few washes.
If your customers complain about cold sheets in winter, brushed polyester is the easier sell. If they complain about night sweating, cotton breathes better.
Price and margin
Here the gap is real. A brushed polyester sheet set typically costs 30 to 45 percent less than an equivalent cotton set at the same GSM. The reason is raw material: polyester yarn is cheaper and more stable in price than cotton, which swings with weather and global supply.
For a container order, that difference directly improves your landed margin. For markets where price drives the decision, brushed polyester wins almost every time.
Durability and care
Polyester holds colour longer and resists pilling better than most cotton at the same price point. It also dries fast and needs no ironing, which matters for hotels and rental bedding.
Cotton develops a soft, broken-in feel over time and handles high-temperature washing well. The trade-off is shrinkage risk and slower drying.
Moisture management
This is the one area where cotton clearly leads. Cotton absorbs moisture and releases it slowly, which helps in humid climates. Polyester wicks sweat but traps more heat, so it suits air-conditioned rooms and cooler markets better.
