A bedsheet order looks simple on paper: pick a fabric, pick a colour, get a quote. In practice, the difference between a good shipment and a costly one is decided by four specifications that buyers often skip. This guide covers GSM, width, weave, and dyeing, plus the questions to ask before you commit.
GSM: the number that sets quality
GSM (grams per square metre) is the single most important number in fabric. For bedsheets, common ranges are: 85–110 GSM (economy), 110–140 (standard), 140–160 (premium hotel). Below 100 GSM, sheets feel thin and wear fast. Above 160, cost climbs quickly.
Ask for a swatch and a digital scale check. A reliable supplier quotes GSM honestly and will let you verify it on arrival.
Width: check your cutting layout
Bedding widths run from 150 cm to 320 cm. Wider fabric means fewer seams and less waste, but not every factory handles wide looms well. Decide your cutting layout first — fitted sheet, flat sheet, pillowcases — then match the width to it.
A common mistake is ordering the same width for all products. Fitted sheets need more allowance than flat sheets. Tell your supplier the full set breakdown, not just a fabric name.
Weave: plain, twill, or satin
Plain weave is the cheapest and most common for budget bedding. Twill adds diagonal texture and durability. Satin (sateen) has a smooth, glossy face that hotels like. Each changes both feel and price, so match the weave to your customer's expectation, not just your margin.
Dyeing: solid, printed, or yarn-dyed
Solid colours use piece dyeing — fast and low cost. Printed designs use rotary or digital printing; digital gives finer detail but a higher price. Yarn-dyed (like checks and stripes) costs the most but resists fading.
Ask about colour fastness (ISO 105) and shrinkage (AATCC 135). These two tests catch most quality problems before they reach your customer.
